On the morning of April 16, Prof. Jia Wenjian, vice president of Beijing Foreign Studies University and evaluation expert from the Ministry of Education, was present at the report meeting of self-evaluation on the undergraduate teaching of School of Foreign Languages(SFL), SNNU. Wang Qilong, dean of SFL, Ma Lan, deputy Party Secretary of SFL, Liu Quanguo and Sun Jian, deputy deans of SFL, members of the Teaching Committee and heads of departments of SFL attended this meeting. Ma Zhengping, Party Secretary of the school chaired the meeting.
At the beginning of this meeting, Mr. Ma Zhengping gave a brief introduction to Prof. Jia Wenjian and other participants, followed by Prof. Wang Qilong's expression of warm welcome to all.
On behalf of SFL, Prof. Liu Quanguo delivered the self-evaluation report on the undergraduate teaching of the school. The report covered three parts: a brief introduction to the school, distinguishing features and measures, the existing problems and solutions to be taken. The report reviewed history of the school and its academic honors earned in recent years. For example, 8 and 9 National Social Science Fund projects applied by the staff of the school were approved in 2015 and 2016 respectively, ranking the first among all the schools and universities of the same level in China. In 2018, the school was granted the authorization of doctoral degree of foreign language and literature. All these achievements were undoubtedly an recognition of the work and development of the school in recent years, and also provided much encouragement for all the teachers and students of the school. This report also focused on the distinguishing features and measures of the school in seven aspects, including talent training, regulation construction, academic resources development, spirit of learning improvement, curriculum arrangement, overseas internship system and public English teaching, etc. Also reported were the existing problems and corresponding improvement measures of undergraduate teaching based on the result of self-evaluation.
After the report, Prof. Jia Wenjian expressed his acknowledgement and congratulation to SFL. In consideration with some measures adopted by Beijing Foreign Studies University, Prof. Jia Wenjian also discussed with all the participants three aspects of the issue: the pass rate of CET-4 and CET-6, the exchange rate of students studying abroad and the participation of the international summer camps. Concrete and feasible suggestions were also put forward at the same time. Apart from the task of teaching students of foreign language programs, teaching staff of SFL also bear the responsibility of teaching students of other programs of the whole university. Prof. Jia Wenjian pointed out that the process of improving students’ ability on the foreign language also meant achieving the consensus, and can only be achieved by cooperation of different schools and colleges of the university.
At the end of this meeting, Prof. Wang Qilong made a brief summary of the meeting, responded to the comments and suggestions put forward by Prof. Jia Wenjia, and expressed the future perspective of SFL.
This meetingcomprehensively summarized the achievements of SFL in recent years, and the visit of the evaluation expert has also given a fillip to the school, which will help SFL to carry out its work with definite objects in the future and improve the teaching quality in an all-round way.
